Multibeam echosounder
Hits per Grid Cell
Estimate the number of sonar hits (pings and beams) within a single square grid cell, given swath geometry, vessel speed, and ping rate.
This calculator assumes beams are equidistant, and that the sonar range setting gives a full swath for the average depth specified.
Water Column
Range: 1 – 11,000 (metres equivalent)
Depth must be between 1 and 11,000 m equivalent.
Sonar Geometry
Range: 10 – 178 degrees
Swath angle must be between 10 and 178 degrees.
Range must be between 1 and 15,000 m equivalent.
Vessel & Sonar
Must be greater than zero
Speed must be greater than zero.
—
pings / s
Range: 10 – 4,096
Beams must be between 10 and 4,096.
Range: 0 – 10
Swaths per ping must be between 0 and 10.
Grid
Range: 0.05 – 10,000 (metres equivalent)
Cell size must be between 0.05 and 10,000 m equivalent.

These results are informational only and assume equidistant beam spacing and a full swath at the specified depth. Actual hit counts vary with seafloor topography, vessel motion, sonar mode, and system-specific settings. MosaicHydro accepts no liability for decisions made based on this tool.
